Physical & Occupational Therapy - Pediatric

At Kentucky Children’s Hospital, UK HealthCare Physical and Occupational Therapy improves children’s lives in a variety of ways. Our physical therapists and occupational therapists work with children to help them recover from injuries; develop gross and fine motor skills, such as dressing and feeding; improve strength, balance and flexibility; build self-confidence; and improve functional independence. Every child’s needs and goals are different, which is why our team creates a personalized plan for each patient and provides the support they need to succeed. Your physical or occupational therapist can also make recommendations for follow-up services once you are discharged.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy focuses on improving gross motor skills for children with neurological dysfunction, musculoskeletal diseases, genetic conditions, oncological diagnoses and congenital disorders, as well as those recovering from surgery. Our team works with infants and children of all ages while in the hospital. During treatment, physical therapists may lead children through a variety of exercises and provide education about injury prevention or their diagnosis.

Occupational Therapy

Pediatric occupational therapists evaluate a child’s strengths and difficulties in critical developmental areas. Our team then designs interventions that promote the healthy development of skills that children need to perform everyday functions and age-appropriate activities.

Pediatric occupational therapists support optimal sensory processing, muscle functioning, positioning, coordination, and cognitive and visual motor processing in order to promote children’s confidence and success within their environment. Our team works with infants and children of all ages in collaboration with the child’s family and their healthcare team.

Why Choose Kentucky Children’s Hospital for Physical & Occupational Therapy?

Children’s rehabilitation therapy needs are different than those of adults. It is important for children to receive therapy services from professionals who routinely work with pediatric patients. The UK HealthCare Physical and Occupational Therapy team specializes in working with children and educating families about what they can do to help their loved ones thrive. Our therapists are supported by a wide range of specialists and services at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, which U.S. News & World Report named the No. 1 hospital in Kentucky and the Bluegrass Region.
