What to Expect When You Visit Our Pediatric ER

We want to help you and your child prepare for your visit to the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center, UK HealthCare’s Emergency Department for kids. Our emergency department is designed especially for children and includes kid-friendly décor as well as toys, crayons and coloring pages available for your child during their visit.

It is normal for kids to feel anxious about visiting the hospital. You can help ease their fears by being honest, calm and clear about what to expect.

It is also important to stay calm yourself, as children’s emotions can be influenced by yours. Before coming to the hospital, encourage your child to bring something comforting to them, such as a stuffed animal, toy or blanket. To prepare yourself for the visit, pack snacks for yourself, chargers for your electronic devices and a change of clothes. Showing your child that you are prepared and aware of what their emergency visit will look like will help create a positive experience during your visit.

While at the hospital, you may meet one of our child life specialists, who can help your child understand everything about their visit so that they know what to expect.
