Pediatric Intensive Care at Kentucky Children’s Hospital
Children aren’t small adults. They have unique and distinct medical needs, as well as anatomical and developmental differences. That means that every aspect of their care has to take those differences into consideration.
At Kentucky Children’s Hospital, all pediatric intensive care services are provided with the unique health needs of kids in mind. Whether we’re treating an illness or an injury, our team of providers works together collaboratively to diagnose and proactively treat the condition, all while also providing support to the patient’s family.
In the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), patients receive critical care, meaning they are under continuous monitoring and have nurses readily available in case their condition worsens or changes. Our experienced staff can care for a range of problems in critically ill patients up through age 18, including burns, trauma injuries, cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery, just to name a few.

Care in the intensive care units at Kentucky Children’s Hospital is provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, a nutritionist, social workers, nurse practitioners and pediatric intensivists. They work in collaboration with other pediatric specialists at Kentucky Children’s Hospital as necessary to provide individualized care for the specific medical condition a patient is facing.
In instances where a child has a potentially life-threatening cardiovascular health issue, such as congenital heart disease or rhythm abnormalities, a team of pediatric intensivists provide care in our dedicated CICU. In our CICU, a separate unit from our other intensive care units, we provide around the clock medical management for seriously ill pediatric cardiac patients, including those recovering after a surgical or nonsurgical cardiovascular procedure. Our entire team, including specialty trained ICU physicians and nurses who specifically treat children with congenital heart disease, is comprised of pediatric cardiac critical care experts who are dedicated to patient safety and quality care.
The tiniest patients also receive the attention of our pediatric intensivists. Newborns requiring intensive care are treated and cared for in the pediatric NICU.
In the PICU, we pair together specialized expertise with the latest advancements in technology. This allows us to quickly diagnose and treat pediatric patients, leading to the best possible outcomes and reassurance for parents and other family members.
