One common treatment for endometrial cancer is surgery, where a procedure is performed to remove the tumor and a margin of healthy tissue. Patients have several surgical options, and the type of surgery can depend on a few factors, such as:
- Your overall health
- The type and stage of your cancer
- The size of the tumor
If the cancer has spread within the vagina, outside of the vagina to the lymph nodes or to other parts of the body, your healthcare provider may recommend one of the following procedures.
- Hysterectomy. The main treatment for endometrial cancer is a hysterectomy, an operation to remove the uterus and cervix. When the uterus is removed through an incision in the abdomen, it is called a simple or total abdominal hysterectomy. If the uterus is removed through the vagina, it is known as a vaginal hysterectomy.
- Lymph node surgery. This operation removes lymph nodes from the pelvis and the area next to the aorta to see if they contain cancer cells that have spread from the uterine tumor. It is called a lymph node dissection when most or all the lymph nodes in a certain area are removed.
