Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI)

Follow-up care

If you or someone around you is experiencing signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, or discomfort in the arms, neck, jaw or back, call 911 immediately. Do not wait or try to drive yourself to the hospital. Every second counts, and emergency responders can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the hospital.

Staying on top of follow-up care is important to prevent complications of an NSTEMI and to help reduce your risk of another heart attack.

  • Make sure you keep any scheduled appointments with your cardiology team.
  • Take any medicines exactly as directed.
  • Tell your providers about any new symptoms you experience.

You will be referred to a cardiac rehabilitation program, which will help you learn how to care for your heart. Cardiac rehab typically takes place several times a week for a few months. It includes supervised exercise, nutritional guidance and other support, including smoking cessation tools.

Long-term medicines will be recommended, as needed, to help:

  • Prevent blood clots
  • Improve heart strength and function
  • Manage heart rate
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Treat episodes of angina (chest pain)

Your cardiologist will find the best medication regimen for your recovery.

You can also take other steps to improve and protect your heart health. Add heart-healthy lifestyle habits to your daily routine: exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, avoid smoking and find meaningful ways to ease stress.
