Every diabetes case is different. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan according to your child’s specific needs. Your child’s plan will use a combination of approaches.

Because the pancreas does not make insulin in type 1 diabetes, your child will need to receive insulin injections or to have insulin delivered through a pump. Always take insulin as prescribed.

Your child will participate in Diabetes Self-Management Education with our team of pediatric diabetes educators to learn how to manage day-to-day situations with diabetes, including treating high and low blood sugar levels.

Knowing your child’s blood sugar level can help you make good treatment decisions. Your child’s medical providers can help you understand what is a target blood sugar level versus what’s too high or too low.

A diet filled with fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, and whole grains can help your child maintain target blood sugar levels. Regular sodas and fruit juices are NOT recommended.

Experts recommend that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Exercise can help their bodies use insulin better.
