Every gastroparesis case is different. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment according to your specific needs. Your plan may use a combination of approaches.

Your provider may recommend changes to what you eat and drink.

Botox injections into the muscles around the stomach may help it relax and allow food to empty.

If medication doesn’t work, your provider might use gastric electrical stimulation to improve stomach emptying. During this procedure, a small device is implanted under the skin in the abdomen that sends mild electrical pulses to stomach muscles and nerves to help the stomach empty.

You may need a feeding tube if you aren’t getting enough calories or nutrients from the food you eat. During this procedure, a tube is threaded through your mouth, nose or a small incision into your intestines. Special liquid food can then bypass the stomach to provide more calories and nutrients.

Your provider might prescribe medication that helps the stomach empty more effectively, as well as manage nausea, pain or vomiting. The timing of your medications might also be adjusted.

This procedure delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream using an IV. It is often used as a short-term treatment until you can keep food down or until a feeding tube is placed. Sometimes it is used as a long-term treatment.
