Ear pinning surgery (Otoplasty)

Prominent ear is when the ear sticks out from the head. It is usually present at birth and can be caused by malformed cartilage during ear development in the womb. It results in an ear that sticks out and has some flattening of the ear cartilage. If not corrected, they often cause self-esteem issues during childhood.

Prominent ears can be corrected by a surgery called otoplasty. This involves changing and improving the shape of the ear cartilage to bring the ear closer to the side of the head. A small incision is usually made on the back of the ear and a small amount of skin is removed. Then, permanent sutures are placed to reform the proper ear shape and pin the ear back in a more natural and symmetric position.
