One of the best ways to treat diastolic heart failure is by managing your blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, if you have any underlying conditions, such as diabetes or hyperglycemia, it is important to consult with your provider regularly to help manage those conditions. You may worsen your risk of heart failure if these conditions are left untreated.

Most patients with diastolic heart failure take medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and other heart conditions.  Your care team may also prescribe medicines to treat your diastolic heart failure specifically.

Diuretics help remove extra water and sodium from your body which reduces swelling and can make it easier to breathe.  Examples of these medicines include furosemide and bumetanide.  Certain diuretics may lower your potassium and magnesium.  Your team may prescribe supplements if this occurs.

Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are used to treat diabetes by lowering blood sugar, but they are also shown to prolong life and improve heart failure symptoms. Examples of these medicines include canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin.

Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) block the effects of a hormone produced by your adrenal glands.  Blocking this hormone can prevent your heart failure from worsening.  The medicines will lower blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup. Examples of these medicines are spironolactone and eplerenone.

This could include medicines such as beta blockers, ARNIs, ACE inhibitors or ARBs.
