Transposition of the Great Arteries

Ongoing management

Adults with TGA need at least an annual visit with a cardiologist who specializes in working with adults with congenital heart disease, such as the specialists in the Adult Congenital Heart Program at UK Gill Heart & Vascular Institute. Patients may also need regular imaging tests to help prevent or manage complications.

People with TGA may have a higher risk of developing endocarditis, a bacterial infection that affects the heart. To help prevent this infection, antibiotics may be recommended before having dental work done.

Depending upon your condition and the severity of treatment and symptoms, pregnancy needs to be monitored closely. Sometimes, it is not recommended at all. If you are thinking about having a baby, please talk to your doctor. At UK HealthCare, we will work with you to ensure you and your baby remain healthy. Our experts work closely with a team of OB-GYN specialists dedicated to managing high-risk pregnancy.
