As more Fontan patients have survived into adulthood, it has become increasingly clear to physicians that patients cannot be treated as if they have only cardiovascular disease. Instead, Fontan pathophysiology is a multiorgan disease that requires comprehensive, lifelong care.

At the Kentucky Adult Congenital Heart Program, we take a multidisciplinary approach to adult Fontan management. Working with a team of subspecialists across UK HealthCare, our proactive care helps to ensure early detection and treatment of complications.

Pregnancy after Fontan

Some women who have had Fontan surgical procedures can successfully get pregnant and carry a healthy baby to term. However, not all women may be healthy enough to try. Additionally, miscarriage risk is high, as is the risk of complications after birth.

If you decide to try to get pregnant, your congenital heart team will work with UK HealthCare maternal-fetal medicine specialists to ensure you receive the best care to minimize and reduce complications and risks.
