Pressure sore wounds management and reconstruction
Pressure sores result from prolonged pressure on an area of skin. The pressure cuts off the blood flow to that area and causes the entire layer of skin to die. Sometimes these areas will cause tissue loss to structures deep under the skin, such as bone. These wounds often happen in areas where there is no feeling and are very hard to heal. At first, the wounds are managed conservatively with dressing changes, removing pressure, proper nutrition and management of other medical conditions. After that, if the wound shows signs of healing, a “flap” surgery may be an option. The surgeon moves skin and muscle from nearby areas to heal the wounds much faster than with dressing changes alone.
