Abdominal wall reconstruction

Hernia repair: A hernia occurs when contents of the belly bulge through an opening in the belly muscles. The surgery is done by a plastic surgeon alone or with help from a general surgeon. The bulge is placed back in its correct place, and the hernia is repaired. Some belly muscles may need to be separated – this is called a “component separation.” A mesh may also be used to close the hernia. In some cases, extra belly tissue is also removed. Most patients can go home from the hospital after several days.

Removal of belly tissue (panniculectomy): This surgery is most often needed in patients who have lost a significant amount of weight. The excess tissue can cause rashes and infections and can make it hard to walk. This surgery removes extra tissue below the belly button. Drains are placed at the time of surgery. Patients often stay in the hospital overnight.
