UK Emergency Medicine APP Postgraduate Training Program

Welcome

Our goal is to provide an outstanding one year postgraduate education for those wanting to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine. The program will follow the guidelines recommended through SEMPA (Society for Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants) and prepare our APP graduates for the NCCPA EM CAQ (National Commission for Certification for Physician Assistant Emergency Medicine Certificate of Added Qualifications). These guidelines also closely follow the EM certification recommended requirements for NP post-graduate level training.

The University of Kentucky is located in Lexington, Kentucky, and is only one of two academic tertiary care facilities in the entire state of Kentucky. It is also the only level-one adult and pediatric trauma center in the region. The combined adult and pediatric emergency department cares for over 90,000 patients annually, which includes referrals from all of Central and Eastern Kentucky. The department has an established emergency medicine (EM) physician residency training program since 1996 with 30 EM physician residents and 38 attendings. We currently have 23 APPs working alongside the residents and faculty in our high volume, high acuity ED. The program is nationally known for its medical educators as well as an extensive EM ultrasound program with an EM fellowship program. We operate in a newly opened, state of the art Emergency Department. UK Medical Center is also a comprehensive stroke center, a cardiac catheterization center, and a National Cancer Institute affiliate.

The program is 12 months and will consist of supervised direct adult and pediatric patient care in the emergency department, as well as opportunities to work with other specialties. The program will offer a weekly lecture series in conjunction with the EM Physician Residency as well as various educational opportunities including ultrasound training, procedural simulation workshops, and attendance to national conferences. Postgrad trainees will obtain certification in PALS, ACLS, ATLS, NIHSS, and FCCS. A yearly salary with an extensive benefits package will be provided to the successful candidates.

Applicant Requirements

We offer four positions to graduates from accredited PA or NP programs. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, a cover letter, and a strong letter of recommendation from a faculty professor from their program, APP or physician mentor, or their supervising physician. Successful applicants will be motivated individuals with a desire to learn and work in emergency medicine. Short answers to supplemental screening questions may also be required.
