Refractive Surgery / Laser Vision Correction

The UK Refractive Surgery Service uses state-of-the-art technology to minimize dependency on corrective eyewear. John D. Conklin Jr., MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained associate professor of comprehensive ophthalmology, is the director of the service. He has extensive experience in refractive surgery and has spent time in Bogota, Columbia, and Shanghai, China, for training purposes. He has served as a clinical investigator in studies that resulted in FDA approval of LASIK. He also has taught and certified area eye surgeons and UK Advanced Eye Care resident physicians in LASIK and other refractive surgical procedures.

The UK Refractive Surgery Service offers several approaches to help patients achieve freedom from spectacle/contact lens wear. These include LASIK/LASEK, implantable contact lenses (ICLs) and/or refractive cataract surgery.

• The Bausch & Lomb excimer and Ziemer femtosecond laser systems are used to create a personalized LASIK treatment profile that will provide an optimal subjective/objective visual outcome for the patient.
• The Staar phakic intraocular or implantable contact lens can be utilized alone or in combination with LASIK to correct near-sightedness/astigmatism.
• Various intraocular lenses (ie. monofocal, multifocal or toric) are implanted during cataract surgery to correct near/far sightedness, astigmatism and/or presbyopia.
