Dr. Vedant A. Gupta received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. This was followed by a chief residency year in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic, during which he helped train other residents.

In 2013, Gupta came to UK to complete an internal medicine cardiology fellowship. He then completed a yearlong fellowship at UK in advanced cardiac imaging and received training in cardiac MRI and cardiac CTA.

Gupta practices general cardiology at UK and is an attending physician. He is particularly interested in helping critically ill patients and in the application of advanced imaging techniques in critical and complex cases.

Gupta is also an assistant professor of cardiology in the UK College of Medicine and is associate program director for UK’s General Cardiology Fellowship Program.

His research examines how to improve systems of care to better help all types of patients, specifically around cardiac risks and non-cardiac conditions. Through his research, Gupta is working on systems-based improvement to identify and provide better care for non-cardiac patients who would benefit from additional heart-related testing and treatment.

“When people come in for different surgeries, different procedures or come in with infections, we’re learning to appreciate that there’s more and more risk to their heart, even if their heart wasn’t the reason they came in,” Gupta says. “Understanding that, being able to identify the patients who would benefit from additional testing and treatment, that’s what I do most of my research on.”

Personal Statement

My goal is to take the best care of my patients both now and in the future. The reason I’m engaged in educational activities and why I do research is to help take care of patients better tomorrow than we do today. That involves training physicians who will be there tomorrow but also understanding disease states and different conditions.
