Barbara Crutchfield received her doctoral degree from Indiana University, School of Optometry, Bloomington. She is certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and licensed to practice in the state of Kentucky. She is an active fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and recently received board certification from the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry.

Personal Statement

Primary eye care isn’t boring; I knew I wanted to help people see from a young age. And I love it, still. It’s my goal to make every patient feel at ease. Making them feel comfortable helps me get to know them and understand what kind of care they need.

  Dr. Barbara Crutchfield was extraordinary. She listened to my concerns and did not rush me. She explained the testing as I expressed anxiety over the subjectiveness of the eye sight testing where views are compared and rated. When I sense pressure to rush through testing, I doubt myself and question the veracity of the testing. Dr. Crutchfield took the time to explain astigmatism to me as the reason I was seeing shadows on the letters at times. I had been fearful that my eyes were failing. She steadily gave me feedback that helped me understand the process. She examined my old old glasses and the newest and explained to me why I was seeing better with the older glasses (over 6+ years old glasses). She assured me that the blurry vision I have been experiencing was not me going blind. It was likely the Xiidra. It actually is an irritant and distorts my vision. She directed me to discard Xiidra and use Restasis to treat my dry eyes. She also addressed my use of a full-face CPAP mask with foam (ResMed F20) and we discussed that as a further irritant and cause of uncomfortable eye symptoms. She patiently tested my eyesight. I felt relaxed and confident unlike recent experiences. I could see without fuzzy shadows! I was candid and not anxious about the process. I trusted the process since she was guiding me and giving me feedback from whatever Information her equipment was relaying to her. This was a wonderful experience as I trusted the process and felt validated as a person who was seeking a solution. Why was my vision blurry? Why was I having serious difficulty reading and even seeing out into the field as my grandson played baseball? Why were my eyes tearing when I wore the new glasses, even after mindfully working to adjust to them? When did I have an ongoing dull headache when wearing the new glasses though my eyes seemed to relaxin in my old old glasses? Dr. Crutchfield observed and tested. I am so very grateful! I learned a great deal as I worked with her during the eye exam. I understand better what is happening to me with my vision. I am better informed now and more confident regarding my health. I was scared. I am not now. Thank you!
