About

Austin V. Stone, MD, PhD, a knee and shoulder specialist, earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a fellowship in sports medicine at the Rush University School of Medicine in Chicago. During his residency, he earned his PhD in molecular medicine and translational sciences with a focus on meniscal injury and osteoarthritis.

Dr. Stone’s goals are treating musculoskeletal injuries and disease to restore an active lifestyle. He has a significant background and training in advanced orthobiologics for treatment of sports injuries and early arthritic disease. Dr. Stone has conducted extensive research on the early mechanisms of cartilage and meniscus injury that lead to osteoarthritis. His additional research interests include orthopaedic clinical outcomes, overhead athlete injuries and cycling injury and performance.

Personal Statement

I am an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine physician who enjoys taking care of athletes and active individuals of all ages. I specialize in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine conditions of the shoulder, elbow and knee, in addition to cartilage injuries and the use of orthobiologics.  As an avid cyclist and runner, I am committed to helping my patients restore an active lifestyle through excellence in musculoskeletal care, continued participation in state-of-art orthopaedic research and dedication to sports medicine.

I enjoy being involved in the community and most enjoy time spent with my family.

    Nurse practitioner Geri Sipe has always been an active mom to her 9- and 13-year-old kids. She loves sports and so do they. But one summer night, a friendly game turned dangerous. After an injury shooting hoops, the news wasn’t good. Geri had ruptured her ACL and had multiple lateral and medial meniscus tears. But knee surgery got Geri back on the road to recovery, eager to get back on her feet.

    Miko McFarland

    Back in the Saddle

    Professional trick and stunt rider Miko McFarland competed throughout the Midwest and performed in the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, but continued to have severe knee pain from a previous injury. Dr. Austin Stone used a surgical technique that took the pressure off Miko’s knee. This allowed her to return to riding and discover a new sport of competitive archery.

    Dr. Stone speaks quickly and moves through his ideas with ease. He gives the Impression of a very busy man. I feel I understood what we discussed, but I had further questions (afterwards). I may get those answered. I felt a bit of pressure to hurry up and schedule the next treatment, perhaps the obvious next step, but no think about it and let us know.
