UK Markey Cancer Center Research Network Fact Sheet
As Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, the UK Markey Cancer Center is equipped to deliver leading-edge cancer care and engage in groundbreaking research. The Markey Cancer Center is committed to reducing cancer mortality and the burden of disease through comprehensive programs and collaborations in cancer research, treatment and education.
Through the Markey Cancer Center Research Network, we bring access to important research studies into the communities we serve. The Markey Cancer Center Research Network collaborates with healthcare facilities throughout Kentucky and surrounding Appalachia to provide access to research studies, disseminate evidence-based findings and research education.
Mission
The Markey Cancer Center Research Network (MCCRN) is an alliance of doctors conducting clinical research studies in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancers. The MCCRN conducts studies developed by Markey’s own doctors and scientists as well as national studies available through Markey’s membership in the National Cancer Institute’s National Clinical Trials Network.
The network provides innovative research studies, support and education for Research Network member sites and thorough quality assurance so all studies meet the highest ethical standards
Access to Research Close to Home
Community healthcare facilities that are members of MCCRN offer their patients the opportunity to participate in clinical research studies. Patients remain close to home during treatment, under the direct care of their trusted local physicians and near their own support systems.
Research
Research studies are targeted to focus both on the areas with the highest rate of disease and the types of cancers that most affect these regions. Appalachia has some of the highest rates of cancer incidence and mortality in the United States, especially for lung, colorectal and cervical cancers.
The MCCRN clinical research study portfolio is governed by an advisory committee that includes representatives from each MCCRN member site. This committee establishes priorities for the study portfolio and guides the development of high-priority studies.
Coordinating Center
The MCCRN Coordinating Center supports operations of the research network, including:
- Network membership
- Portfolio advisory committee
- Research education and training • Research study development
- Centralized recruitment
- Project management
- Data management
- Monitoring and quality assurance
- Contracting and research budgets
