The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network enhances access to high-quality cancer care through collaboration with community hospitals. Our vision is for Kentuckians and those from surrounding states to have access to excellent cancer care.
Affiliate Network Benefits
The Markey Affiliate Network assists doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical staff at local hospitals that provide excellent care in their communities. When patients need care that is not available locally, they can be referred to the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington. When that happens, Markey doctors work with community doctors and oncologists to minimize travel for patients and their families.
How Does Markey Expand Local HealthCare Options?
Hospitals: The Markey Affiliate Network provides cancer-specific education and training programs for community doctors, nurses and staff to ensure the most up-to-date cancer information is available to providers.
The Markey Affiliate Network also assists cancer programs in achieving and maintaining Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation, which recognizes hospitals for achieving high-quality, comprehensive and multidisciplinary cancer care. Hospitals gain access to specialized programs that may not be available in local communities, such as genetic counseling.
Cancer patients: Patients at Markey Affiliate Network hospitals often have access to the latest, most up-to-date treatments, minimizing travel outside their local area. If care is not available locally, affiliates can work with Markey to ensure patients receive the best care possible.
Families and caregivers: The Markey Affiliate Network provides as many resources as possible locally, so families and caregivers can focus on supporting their loved one. When treatment is available locally, families can spend more time with their loved ones and less time on the road.
Local doctors: Specialists at Markey work with local hospitals, primary care and referring doctors to coordinate cancer care before, during and after treatment. Should patients need cancer treatment in Lexington, Markey ensures their care will be as smooth as possible.
Communities: Markey helps affiliates plan and host local cancer prevention events and activities, such as health fairs, cancer screening programs and survivorship events.
