Spending quality time with patients is a vital part of Dr. Hasan Fattah's job

Hasan Fattah, MD
Making the Rounds

Meet Dr. Hasan Fattah, a transplant nephrologist who specializes in kidney and pancreas transplantation at the UK Transplant Center, which performs more than 200 transplant procedures each year and has performed more than 2,600 kidney transplants since the program was founded in 1964. We talked with Dr. Fattah about his journey to becoming a transplant nephrologist and what inspires him every day at his job.

When did you become interested in the medical field?

My passion for medicine began in high school. I was born in Aleppo, and I did my medical school there. Of course, my passion for medicine continues to grow after all those years.

Why did you want to be a transplant surgeon?

I've seen people who are getting dialysis. Unfortunately, they do not have the best quality of life. Many studies show that these patients will have the expected life expectancy of most advanced cancers. The best option for them is kidney transplant. That's the reason why I started getting more interested in learning more about how to help this patient. Transplant will offer the best opportunity to get your life back.

How do you approach patient care?

I think I spend more time with patients than average. I listen to them, and I keep asking them questions, just to make sure. Sometimes a patient will feel a little bit shy at the beginning, like discussing special things about them. But by the end, I am able to make them feel like they can be open with me.
