KNI neurologist advocates for more healthcare access, research in D.C.
Dr. Mam Ibraheem, assistant professor of neurology and epidemiology at UK and provider at the Lexington VA Medical Center-Troy Bowling Campus, was selected by the American Academy of Neurology to attend the 17th Annual Neurology on the Hill in Washington, D.C., in late February. He was chosen based on his dedication to advancing neurology health policy, neurology healthcare and evidence-based neurological care in Kentucky and at the national level.
A number of selected members of the academy represented the group and advocated for preserving access to care for neurologic patients, supporting research for neurologic disease and maintaining access to treatment.
“We are increasingly facing an increased burden of chronic complex neurologic disorders with aging population,” said Ibraheem. “However, we have limited numbers of curative medications and are being constantly challenged with prescribing expensive medications. Neurology on the Hill gave us the opportunity to meet with lawmakers face-to-face to educate them about the critical role of neurologists in healthcare, the need for reform and to advocate for more research funding and drug pricing reform.”
During the visit, Ibraheem met with Congress members, including Rand Paul, Brett Guthrie, Andy Barr and John Yarmuth, as well as the staff of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He also met with Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, MD.
“Neurology on the Hill was a great opportunity for professional relationship building with U.S. Congress members and was a great venue to advocate for ongoing neurology-related public health issues and to learn more about public policy at the national level,” said Ibraheem.
