Interventional Radiology
What Is Interventional Radiology?
In the field of radiology, diagnostic radiologists use medical imaging studies to evaluate the internal structures of the body to diagnose injuries, illnesses and physical anomalies. Physicians who practice interventional radiology also interpret imaging studies, but they can take it a step further: Interventional radiologists use state-of-the-art imaging modalities such as CT, fluoroscopy and ultrasound to perform image-guided, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat conditions throughout the body such as cancer or stroke. As a result, they’re able to use the least invasive techniques possible and reduce the patient’s cost, pain, recovery time and surgical risk.
The interventional radiologists at UK HealthCare are part of the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
Interventional Radiology Specialties
During an interventional radiology procedure, physicians maneuver needles and catheters through the patient’s body as they watch their progress on a screen. Once they reach the problematic area, they may perform a procedure that cures, repairs or improves a health issue, often without any additional incisions.
While common therapeutic procedures, such as balloon angioplasty and vascular stenting, were originally developed by interventional radiologists, these specialists now perform a wide variety of minimally invasive treatments.
Some of those treatments address:
- Biliary obstruction
- Chronic pelvic pain in women
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Kidney cancers and noncancerous kidney masses
- Liver cancer and cancers that have spread to the liver
- Lung cancer and cancers that have spread to the lung or bones
- Pelvic congestion syndrome
- Portal hypertension
- Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations
- Spinal compression fractures
- Urinary obstruction
- Uterine fibroids
- Varicoceles
- Vascular malformations
The specialists also perform:
- Biopsies
- Hemodialysis access management
- Inferior vena cava filter replacements and removals
- Vascular access for chemotherapy and long-term infusions
